Back Pain 101
This year in October between the 3-7th is Back Care Awareness Week. According to the NHS, ‘back pain is the leading cause of disability’. Approximately ‘1 in 10 people suffer from this condition and is becoming more common with increasing age.
If you are experiencing back pain at this current moment, it’s important to understand why and when the pain began as it will give you a clearer picture of how to find a solution. Back pain can be caused by poor posture or incorrect technique of lifting and carrying, here’s what you can do to recover:
1. Stretch and mobilise – After sitting at your desk or in a van for long periods of time, muscles can tighten up and can disrupt your spinal alignment – Improve posture by using these 5 stretches: http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/living-with-low-back-pain-11/five-back-pain-stretches
2. Learn technique – This will help activate the correct muscles whilst lifting and carrying which will prevent injury
3. Seek a qualified professional – If you are unsure of how to improve your posture, technique or require treatment; go to your GP or a physiotherapist.
