Building mental resilience in our leaders
We receive 11 million bits of information every second, but the executive, thinking centres of our brain can effectively process only 40 bits of information, according to Shawn Achor, co-founder of the Institute for Applied Positive Research and author of The Happiness Advantage.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could decrease the amount of information our leaders receive (emails/video calls?), this is unlikely, but we can teach them to be resilient mentally and compartmentalise their thinking to optimise the way we process information.
Compartmentalising work is useful when you consider that switching from one type of task to another makes it difficult to tune out distractions and reduces productivity by as much as 40% (American Psychological Association).
Burnout is creeping up on many of our brilliant leaders so do all you can to provide them with tools and techniques proven to maintain and build mental resilience.
