Heat wave tips for colleagues

Heat wave tips for colleagues

We are all celebrating that the rain is stopping and the sunshine is on it’s way. As an employer it’s important we support those colleagues who may be working this weekend during the heart wave.

Below are some hints and tips to consider;

  • Suggest to colleagues to avoid the heat: stay out of the sun and don’t go out between 11am and 3pm (the hottest part of the day) especially for colleagues who are vulnerable to the effects of heat
  • Where you can, keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows
  • Provide lots of fluids and ample amounts of water – office workers often forget to drink water and warehouse workers, drivers, manual workers need easy access to water
  • Listen to alerts on the radio, TV and social media about keeping cool. The NHS has some great hints and tips so print off, add to your intranet and help colleagues as much as possible
  • If you have uniforms, can you compromise during the heat wave? Explore if you can swap tight fitting clothes with loose, cool clothing and for those outdoor can you provide hats
  • Provide sun block for colleagues who work outdoors
  • Remind colleagues to check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves
