Their minds matter too – Ensuring managers are not left vulnerable
Hopefully with the dreadful impact of COVID-19, we now know that command and control management is on its way out and managers who practice empathy and make an effort to connect with their colleagues are “in” …. but let’s be honest……. with a tough recession forecast, we will be putting managers in even more challenging times; they will need to deliver messages of redundancy, manage cost cutting programmes and lead the recovery of their teams, their families and themselves from the COVID-19 crisis.
This is an almighty challenge.
Where we can, we need to help managers manage their personal emotions and learn to cope and talk about when they feel vulnerable. Helping them to have a toolbox of techniques to see them through the touch times.
Hit pause before you attempt to hit play – the best leaders are able to hit a pause button when they become emotional, reflect and plan the next steps.
Hit stop and take a step back – Colleagues confronted by an angry/upset manager are less willing to work hard or implement change. Stop, take a breath and find somebody to talk to.
Simple advice to help leaders works through HUGE challenges.
